Daniel J. Horgan is a practicing tax professional, educator, and human-rights researcher whose work spans three decades and four continents. He currently serves as a Senior Tax Analyst with Block Advisors, preparing federal and state personal returns ranging from simple W-2 filings to Schedule C, E, and partnership work, including complex returns for foreign nationals with FBAR disclosures. He also owns and operates Zootown Arthouse, a short- and long-term rental property, keeping his books and doing his own taxes.
Before tax practice, Daniel was a high school teacher and International NGO worker. He spent seven years living, studying, and working internationally for I.N.G.O.s in unarmed civilian protection, advocacy, and human-rights monitoring — including three years with Nonviolent Peaceforce in Sri Lanka, where he managed the organization's largest eastern field office and served as the organization's Security Coordinator. He also developed a compliance tool for the organization's $1 million UNICEF grant. Daniel later served as a start-up project team member with Peace Brigades International (PBI) in Nairobi, Kenya. PBI is a global organization that provides accompaniment and advocacy services to Human Rights Defenders, and as part of the start-up team he introduced PBI to the Kenyan national government and police and helped design the strategy of the PBI Kenya project. He is also the founder of Indigenous Connection, a project that connected Kenyan Indigenous rights groups with foreign embassies for advocacy purposes. He taught for twelve years in U.S. public schools, developing curriculum in business, international law, and mental health education. Daniel has since 2006 been an occasional contributor to Transcend Media Service — read his articles here. Since 1996 he has researched, documented, and written on Indigenous issues — independently and for organizations including Cultural Survival and the Oceti Sakowin Council of the Seven Fires Treaty Council — and he aspires to help create positive change in the area of Original Free Nations rights and environmental protection issues.
